History

Celestial Bonsai was founded in 1991 by Benny Zhang, a bonsai master born in Shanghai, China, who trained under masters at the Shanghai Botanical Garden and later worked at U.S. nurseries in Iowa, New Jersey, Delaware, and California. Initially selling at mall kiosks, craft shows, and private events, the company established an online store in 1995. Zhang continues to operate the business from Maryland, focusing on bonsai cultivation and sales.
