Continental was founded in 1871 in Hanover, Germany, as Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie, initially producing rubber products. It pioneered pneumatic bicycle tires in 1892 and grooved vehicle tires in 1904, and acquired General Tire to expand globally. The company spun off its automotive technology as Vitesco in 2021 and Aumovio in 2025, refocusing on tires and ContiTech, with ContiTech planned for sale in 2026.124
