The company launched its private-label product line in 1993 and began offering full-service pharmacy services in 2003. Petco acquired Drs. Foster & Smith in November 2014, completing the transaction in early 2015. Petco permanently closed all operations of Drs. Foster & Smith on February 12, 2024, affecting 289 employees, with the exception of its live aquaria business.
