Dale Fairbanks, originally from Connecticut and a former jazz trumpeter and guitarist, transitioned to lutherie and relocated to Burlington, Vermont in 2019 to collaborate with Adam Buchwald of Allied Lutherie. There, he established Fairbanks Guitars in a shared workshop, building prominence through custom acoustic instruments. The brand is distinct from the historical A.C. Fairbanks company, which produced banjos in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before the name was sold off.²⁶
