Grand Seiko was introduced in 1960 by Seiko Watch Corporation as a premium line to rival Swiss luxury watches. Production of mechanical models occurs at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture, opened in July 2020 to mark the brand's 60th anniversary.¹³⁵ Spring Drive and quartz watches are made at the Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano Prefecture.⁴⁶
