James S Kirk founded the company in Utica, New York in 1839 with the philosophy that everyone deserves access to natural cleansers. The company relocated to Erlanger, Kentucky in 2005 and was purchased from Procter & Gamble by Rich Oliver in the early 2000s. In 2011, Oliver's daughters Katherine and Molly returned to lead the family business, committing to carry forward the soap-making traditions. The company underwent a significant rebranding in 2018, updating packaging and launching new product lines including a 3-in-1 Head to Toe Nourishing Cleanser and Odor Neutralizing Hand Wash.
