History

Kohler Co. was founded in 1873 by John Michael Kohler through the purchase of the Sheboygan Union Iron and Steel Foundry in Wisconsin. In 1883, Kohler entered the plumbing business by enameling a cast-iron horse trough to create the first bathtub. The company expanded into engines and generators in the early 1920s, formed a joint venture in China in 2007 for small gasoline engines, acquired Clarke Energy in 2017, and in 2023 announced separating its Energy group to be acquired by Platinum Equity and rebranded as Rehlko in 2024.
