Overview

Kuma Coffee is a small-batch coffee roaster based in Seattle, Washington, specializing in direct trade sourcing of high-grown, single-origin microlots from regions including Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Guatemala, and Honduras. The company roasts light to highlight bright acidity, floral, and citrus notes, particularly from African coffees, and operates primarily as a wholesale roaster without its own cafés. It has gained recognition in the specialty coffee market for consistent quality and farm-level relationships since starting in a garage.

History

Kuma Coffee was founded by Mark Barany in 2008, beginning with garage roasting in Seattle after he spent time in Japan and named the company after his bear-like dog 'Kuma,' meaning bear in Japanese. A local grocery store began purchasing his coffee in 2007, leading to a full commercial operation by 2009 and subsequent outgrowing of two roasting facilities. By the time of available reports, the team roasted 2,000 pounds weekly with a small staff, maintaining focus on direct sourcing and light roasting.
