History

The Marxists Internet Archive originated in the early 1990s when an individual known as Zodiac created an initial archive to counter Cold War-era suppression of left-wing literature. The Marx/Engels Internet Archive (MEIA) was formally established in 1996 on a commercial server after being removed from Colorado University. In July 1998, volunteers broke away to create the current Marxists Internet Archive under democratic governance, which rapidly expanded beyond Marx and Engels to include broader Marxist and socialist authors. By January 2000, the site attracted 32,000 monthly visitors and has continued growing as a volunteer-maintained resource.
