Maton was founded in 1946 in Thornbury, Victoria, by Bill May, a jazz musician and woodwork teacher, and his brother Reg, with the name derived from 'May Tone'. Bill built his first guitar in 1936 and later ran a custom manufacturing and repair business before formalizing the company. It relocated to Box Hill, Melbourne, and remains family-owned, now operated by Bill May's daughter Linda and son-in-law Neville Kitchen.
