Matsuda
ActiveOverview
Matsuda is a luxury eyewear brand specializing in hand-crafted sunglasses and optical frames made from premium materials including Japanese titanium and acetate. The brand positions itself in the high-end eyewear market, emphasizing artisanal production methods and design heritage spanning over five decades. Matsuda is known for limited-production, collectible frames that combine historical design inspiration with contemporary aesthetics, appealing to discerning consumers who prioritize craftsmanship and material quality over mass production.
History
Matsuda eyewear was founded by Tokyo-born fashion designer Mitsuhiro Matsuda, who initially built a reputation as a leading Japanese clothing designer under his Nicole Company label. After relocating to Paris for design inspiration, Matsuda drew from art deco, industrial metalwork, and gothic architecture to develop his eyewear aesthetic. The original brand operated for decades before ceasing production. The brand was relaunched in 2012 by CEO James Kisgen, formerly director of sales at Cartier, who restored the brand's original vision while introducing forward-thinking design and material innovations.
