MTH Electric Trains
ActiveOverview
MTH Electric Trains is an American toy train and model railroad designer, importer, and manufacturer based in Maryland. Known for O gauge and O scale models including RailKing and Premier lines, it produces detailed trains with digital sound and command control features across scales like HO, O gauge, and One Gauge. The company faced a near shutdown in 2021 but relocated and continues operations with existing tooling.
History
Founded by Mike Wolf, who began assembling trains for Williams Electric Trains in 1973, MTH Electric Trains originated from his passion for toy trains as a child. It expanded after a settlement with Lionel, reproducing vintage Lionel trains and developing original designs, becoming the world's largest O gauge manufacturer by 1998. The company planned to shut down in May 2021 but relocated to Elkridge, MD, and resumed producing select models.
