Founded in 1918 by Ryosuke Namiki and Matsuo Wada as the Namiki Manufacturing Company, the brand launched its first fountain pen called the Pilot. The company expanded internationally in 1926 by opening offices in London, New York, and Singapore, and in 1930 signed a pivotal contract with Alfred Dunhill to distribute pens in Europe and the United States under the "Dunhill-Namiki" brand. The parent company was renamed Pilot Pen Co., Ltd. in 1938, though Namiki has remained its premium brand for maki-e fountain pens to the present day.
