Nikon Inc.
ActiveOverview
Nikon Corporation is a leading global optical and precision technology company founded in 1917. The company operates through five business segments: Imaging Products, Precision Equipment, Healthcare, Components, and Digital Manufacturing. Nikon is renowned for its cameras, lenses, and semiconductor lithography equipment, holding the position of world's second-largest manufacturer of semiconductor fabrication equipment. The company has diversified beyond traditional imaging into microscopy, healthcare diagnostics, 3D printing, and regenerative medicine to adapt to market changes.
History
Nikon Corporation was established on July 25, 1917, when three leading optical manufacturers merged to form Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha (Japan Optical Industries Co., Ltd.). The company was renamed to Nikon Corporation in 1988 after its camera brand. In 1980, Nikon developed the world's first production-worthy step-and-repeat photolithography tool (NSR-1010G), establishing itself as a leader in semiconductor lithography systems. Since then, Nikon's lithography systems have printed approximately half of all integrated circuits ever manufactured. As of 2022, Nikon became a member of the Mitsubishi Group keiretsu.

Reputation
Nikon is widely respected among professional photographers and engineers for optical quality, build durability, and innovation in lens design. The brand maintains strong loyalty in the DSLR market, though it faced competition from Sony and Canon in the mirrorless transition. Nikon's semiconductor lithography division is regarded as technically sophisticated and essential to global chip manufacturing. Some criticism exists regarding slower mirrorless ecosystem development compared to competitors and premium pricing on certain product lines.
