Founded as Nippon Toki Gomei Kaisha on January 1, 1904, in the village of Noritake near Nagoya by Baron Morimura to manufacture Western-style porcelain for export, the company succeeded in creating its first exportable dinner set called "Sedan" in 1914. By the 1920s, Noritake had consolidated porcelain decorating operations from Tokyo and Kyoto to Nagoya and became IBM's first customer in Japan in 1925. Starting in 1939, the company began manufacturing industrial grinding wheels based on its porcelain finishing technology, which eventually generated greater worldwide sales than its tableware business. The company officially changed its name to Noritake Company Limited in 1981 and has since expanded into ceramics, electronics, and engineering equipment while maintaining its position as a global tableware leader.
