History

Numatic was founded in 1969 by Chris Duncan in Crewkerne, Somerset, initially producing commercial vacuum cleaners for cleaning coal, oil, and gas-fired boilers using an oil drum-based design.¹⁴ The company relocated to Beaminster, Dorset in 1974 and introduced the iconic Henry model in 1981, which became its major product after developing the smiling face design in the mid-1970s.¹⁴ In 1990, it acquired its current manufacturing site in Chard, Somerset, expanding production capabilities, and now operates subsidiaries in several European countries and South Africa.¹²⁴
