History

OHTO was founded in 1919 by Nakata Touzaburo in Tokyo as Nakata-Ohka-do, initially manufacturing ink after his special ink idea was rejected by the Ministry of Finance. In 1949, it launched Japan's and the world's first pencil-shaped ballpoint pen with a chrome ball, marking its entry into pens. The company renamed to 'Auto' post-1949, introduced the world's first water-based ballpoint pen in 1964, changed to 'OHTO' in 1974 due to automotive associations, and continued innovations like ceramic roller pens in 1981 and flash-dry gel ink in 2017.213
