Osprey Packs
AcquiredOverview
Osprey Packs is an American manufacturer of outdoor backpacks and travel gear, founded in 1974 and headquartered in Cortez, Colorado. The company is known for high-performance backpacks designed for backpacking, travel, and outdoor activities, with a reputation for quality construction and ergonomic design. Osprey operates as a subsidiary of Helen of Troy Limited following its acquisition in 2021, and maintains operations across multiple continents while keeping its Colorado headquarters.
History
Osprey was founded in 1974 by Mike Pfotenhauer and his wife Diane Wren as Santa Cruz Recreational Packs in Santa Cruz, California, initially producing custom-fitted backpacks. The company relocated to Colorado in 1990 and eventually settled in Cortez in 1994, where it became known for employing Navajo craftspeople. In 2002, Osprey began outsourcing production to Korea and Vietnam to reduce costs while maintaining a small in-house repair operation. The company was acquired by Helen of Troy Limited in 2021 for $414.7 million, and in 2022 released the UNLTD line featuring patented 3D printed back padding.

Reputation
Osprey is widely regarded as a leading manufacturer of quality backpacks with strong ergonomic design and durability among outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. The brand is praised for its attention to fit and comfort, particularly in technical backpacking packs, and maintains loyalty among serious hikers and travelers. Some criticism exists regarding price positioning relative to competitors, and the shift to overseas manufacturing in 2002 marked a departure from its heritage of domestic production. The company's acquisition by Helen of Troy has not significantly altered its market position or product philosophy.
