Overview

PlaneWave Instruments manufactures high-performance telescopes, mounts, and observatory systems for astronomical research, astrophotography, and defense applications.¹⁴⁶ The company operates from a 57-acre campus in Michigan with additional facilities in California, producing turn-key systems through in-house optomechanical and software capabilities.⁴⁸ It targets astronomers, researchers, and organizations requiring customized telescope solutions.¹

History

PlaneWave Instruments was founded in 2006 with the goal of creating high-quality observatory-class telescopes.⁴ By 2017, it marked its 10th anniversary (noting a possible 2007 start reference), having grown into a premier manufacturer under President & CEO Richard Hedrick, with operations then in Rancho Dominguez, California.³ The company later relocated its main campus to a 57-acre site in Adrian, Michigan, expanding manufacturing and offices while maintaining California facilities.⁴⁸
