Pukas Surf originated in 1973 when the first boards were handshaped in Santander, Spain, initially under the name 'Tablas de surf Santa Marina' at Casa Lola factory. In 1979, Miguel 'Pajarua' Azpiroz joined his sister Marian, rebranding to Pukas and opening a shop in San Sebastian opposite the Maria Cristina Hotel. The company expanded with additional shops in San Sebastian and Zarautz, started surf lessons in 1982, and co-organized Spain's first professional surfing contest with Rip Curl.⁴⁵
