Overview

Rain-X is a synthetic hydrophobic surface treatment brand specializing in water-repellent coatings and automotive care products. The brand is primarily known for its flagship glass treatment that causes water to bead and run off windshields, enhancing visibility and driving safety in wet conditions. Rain-X has expanded its product portfolio to include wiper blades, windshield washer fluid, car wax, plastic cleaners, and bug and tar removers, positioning itself as a comprehensive automotive surface care solution across consumer and commercial markets.

History

Rain-X was invented and patented in 1971 by Howard Ohlhausen under the Unelko Company in Chicago, Illinois, with the product becoming commercially available in 1972. The company relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1981, where Ohlhausen and his sons expanded the product line with innovations including anti-fog treatments and premium windshield wash products. Unelko sold Rain-X to Quaker State in 1997, after which the brand was marketed by SOPUS Products (a Pennzoil-Quaker State subsidiary under Royal Dutch Shell). Illinois Tool Works acquired Rain-X from Shell Oil Company on March 1, 2011, and the brand now operates as part of ITW Global Brands division.
