Rate My Treads

Overview

Rate My Treads is a research initiative by the KITE Research Institute at University Health Network that tests and rates the slip resistance of winter footwear sold in Canada. It uses the Maximum Achievable Angle (MAA) test on icy surfaces to assign snowflake ratings from one to three based on performance thresholds of 7-10°, 11-14°, and 15°+. The program evaluates both casual winter boots and work safety footwear, publishing results on ratemytreads.com to inform consumer choices and reduce fall risks.

History

Developed by the KITE Research Institute, the research arm of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute within University Health Network. Launched to address slips, trips, and falls impacting mobility, using a human-centered MAA test conducted in the WinterLab. Expanded testing to footwear from Canadian retailers, with ongoing annual updates including top-rated boots for 2025.
