Overview

The Republic of Tea is a privately owned American tea company founded in 1992 that pioneered the specialty tea market in the United States. The company sources premium teas from around the world and was the first to bring white tea, rooibos tea, and yerba maté to the American marketplace. It operates through a distinctive brand vocabulary where employees are called "ministers," customers are "citizens," and retail locations are "embassies." The company distributes its products through major retailers including Whole Foods Market and Williams Sonoma, as well as direct-to-consumer channels.

History

The Republic of Tea was founded in 1992 by Mel Ziegler, Patricia Ziegler, and Bill Rosenzweig, who previously co-founded Banana Republic. The company was sold to Ron Rubin in 1994, who became its Executive Chairman and Minister of Tea. Todd Rubin, Ron's son, joined the company in 2007 and became president in 2015, representing the second generation of leadership. The company achieved several industry firsts, including being the first tea company to receive USDA Certified Organic certification and the first to introduce white tea and rooibos to the American market. In 2022, the company celebrated its 30th anniversary and established an Impact TEAm focused on green business practices.
