Sumiko was founded in 1972 by David Fletcher and two business partners in the United States, initially as an importer of audio products for the US market, named after one partner's wife.¹³ The first Sumiko cartridges launched in 1982 with the Talisman series, followed by the Alchemist MC in 1984 and Oyster, Blue Point, Black Pearl models in 1992, which remain popular.¹³ David Fletcher later sold his shares to focus on digital audio, while Sumiko continued cartridge production and expanded distribution partnerships.³
