Takamine was founded in 1959 as a small family-run guitar shop in Sakashita, Japan, at the foot of Mount Takamine. The company was officially renamed Takamine Gakki Ltd. in 1962 and grew to 60 employees by 1968, becoming a leading builder of classical guitars and mandolins. In 1978, Takamine was among the first guitar companies to introduce acoustic-electric models with innovative pickup technology. The company opened a new headquarters and main factory in its hometown of Sakashita in 2005.
