History

Tata Motors was established in 1945 under the Tata Group and entered commercial vehicle production in 1954 through a joint venture with Daimler-Benz. It launched India's first indigenous passenger car, the Tata Sierra, in 1991, followed by models like Indica and Safari. The company expanded globally with acquisitions including Daewoo Commercial Vehicles in 2004 and Jaguar Land Rover. In 2025, it demerged its commercial vehicles business into a separate listed entity, TML Commercial Vehicles Limited, while retaining passenger vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover, and related assets.
