History

Henri Frédéric Sandoz founded Tavannes Watch Co. in 1891 in the small Swiss village of Tavannes in the Jura mountains, with backing from the Schwob Brothers distribution network. The company was formally incorporated as a public limited company on September 25, 1895, and became known for pioneering wristwatch-specific movements in the 1910s and producing one of the first waterproof wristwatches, the Submarine Commander, in 1917. By 1938, Tavannes had grown to employ over 3,000 watchmakers and was the 4th largest watch manufacturer globally. The company ceased operations in 1966 but was resurrected in 2008, and in 2019 acquired UM2, a watch manufacturer based in La Chaux-de-Fonds with 20 years of experience.
