Tokoname-yaki is a traditional Japanese pottery produced in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, recognized as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. It utilizes iron-rich clay from the Chita Peninsula, which fires to a characteristic red color, and is known for tea ceremony items, teapots, vases, and functional ceramics like roof tiles and pipes. The craft spans daily use pottery to industrial products and bonsai pots, with a history of organized production systems enabling large-scale output.

History

Tokoname ware originated in the late Heian period (794-1185), with production of ceramic ware for daily use from ancient times. During the Momoyama period, it focused on tea bowls and ceremony items, while the Edo period developed styles like shudei, hakudei, and hiiro yaki using local iron-rich clay. Designated a traditional craft on June 2, 1976, it expanded into industrial ceramics like tiles and pipes in the Meiji and Taisho eras, alongside continued artisanal pottery.
