Tomoegawa Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer of functional papers and electronic materials. It produced the renowned Tomoe River paper series, a lightweight specialty paper used in notebooks and stationery for its fountain pen-friendly properties. In 2021, Tomoegawa discontinued and transferred Tomoe River production to Sanzen Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd., focusing instead on other functional paper and electronics businesses.

History

Tomoegawa Corporation was founded in 1944. It developed Tomoe River paper around 1981, initially for dictionary production and later adapted for stationery via collaboration with Sakae Technical Paper Co., Ltd. In 2019-2020, production shifted machines due to decommissioning, leading to formula changes; by November 2021, manufacturing and sales rights were sold to Sanzen Paper Manufacturing amid structural reforms.

Products are manufactured in-house at plants including Shizuoka, Japan. Tomoe River paper was produced at Shizuoka Plant #7 until 2019, then #9 until transfer to Sanzen Paper in Ishikawa, Japan, in 2021. Operations emphasize high-quality standards for functional materials.
