Urwerk was founded in 1997 by master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei, inspired by 17th-century wandering hour mechanisms. The brand debuted at the Academy of Independent Watchmakers (AHCI) with its first production model, the UR-102, followed by the signature UR-103 series in 2003, which established its three-dimensional time display. Named after the ancient city of Ur and German for 'original mechanism,' it has maintained small-scale production and independence without conglomerate ownership.
