History

Vista Alegre was founded in 1824 by José Ferreira Pinto Basto in Ílhavo, Portugal, as the country's first porcelain factory, authorized by Royal Licence from King João VI after acquiring the Ermida Farm in 1812 and Vista Alegre Chapel in 1816.¹² It earned the title of Royal Factory in 1829 for its artistry and success.¹ In 2001, it merged with the Atlantis Group to form the Vista Alegre Atlantis Group, the largest tableware group in Portugal and sixth worldwide.¹² The group underwent industrial re-engineering in 2002 to boost capacity.² Visabeira Group acquired it in 2009.³
