Founded in 1883 in Chicago, Illinois by George Washburn Lyon and Patrick Healy as part of the Lyon & Healy company, Washburn quickly became a major stringed instrument manufacturer, becoming the largest mandolin maker in America by 1889. In 1912, the company released the Lakeside Jumbo, the first dreadnought guitar, and in 1930 merged with Tonk Brothers to release the Solo Deluxe, a precursor to the auditorium-style guitar. The brand experienced a major revival in the 1970s, re-establishing itself as a leader through modern designs while maintaining traditional craftsmanship. Washburn is currently part of U.S. Music Corporation.
