History

Sampson Mordan patented the first mechanical propelling pencil in 1822, establishing the foundation for what became Yard-O-Led. The company was formally established as the Yard-O-Led Pencil Company in 1934 in London, named after Mordan's innovative pencil design. After World War II, the company relocated to Birmingham and merged with Sampson Mordan Ltd, acquiring additional pen makers including Edward Baker Ltd. The brand was acquired by Filofax Group in 1988 and subsequently by Imperial Yard Limited in 2015. In 2024, brothers Nick and Giles English, founders of Bremont Watch Company, purchased the business and continue operations in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.
